How to clean a BBQ

The BBQ is like an outdoor cooker and must be kept clean, if you can smell food odours from the BBQ before you start cooking then it isn’t clean.

When BBQ’s have been used they will have grease, soot and burnt-on-food which all need to be removed. A good cleaning routine will help with the maintenance of your BBQ, hygiene and the quality of the food so clean it every time you have used it.

Before you start to clean the BBQ read the manufacturers’ guidance on cleaning. Some BBQ’s should not be cleaned with abrasive cleaning products as they might damage the equipment.

All BBQ’s need to be left to cool down before cleaning.

Metal racks & parts

For metal racks leave the grill in place and heat the BBQ on full heat if gas or put more charcoal on the BBQ and let them reach a red-hot temperature.

Put the lid on and leave for 15-20 minutes. This process bakes off carbonizes, grease and food particles, making it easier to clean.

When the BBQ is cool scrub the bars with a steel brush making sure to get into the corners.

Porcelain racks

For porcelain racks use warm soapy water, leave to soak. It may be necessary to change the water a couple of times before cleaning with warm soapy water and a sponge or cloth. Do not use an abrasive sponge as it might damage the surface.

Rinse and dry them immediately and rub on a light cover of vegetable oil to prevent rusting.

Drip trays

Don’t forget to clean the drip tray when the BBQ has cooled. Check the manufacturers’ guidance and use their recommendations. Some BBQ’s recommend covering the drip tray in foil then covering with sand. Change every time you use it then it will be ready and fresh for you next time, clean the tray with warm soapy water.

Cooking

It is always important to cook food thoroughly, sometimes when using the BBQ food is cooked at a high temperature which burns the outside while leaving the inside raw. This can lead to health problems. For the safest results BBQ at a lower temperature for longer to prevent burning the outside of the food. Before serving use a sharp knife to check that the food has been cooked in the middle.
